Wall Street Journal ranks Pacific a top-10 California private university

Oct 7, 2016

University of the Pacific is the No. 10 top private college in California and No. 13 in the West, according to the first-ever college rankings by the Wall Street Journal and Times Higher Education.

Among both public and private universities, Pacific ranked No. 15 in California and No. 19 in the West. Nationwide, Pacific ranked No. 124 out of 1,061 colleges and universities.

The rankings included results from a survey of 100,000 current students.

Schools were scored based on 15 factors including student outcomes, school resources, student engagement and diversity. Forty percent of each school's overall score is based on student outcomes, including how students fare after leaving campus; 30 percent is based on the school's resources; 20 percent on how well the institution engages its students; and 10 percent on the learning environment, or diversity.

"We are pleased that the new rankings from the Wall Street Journal and Times Higher Education recognize the superior education and preparation for success that University of the Pacific provides to its students," said Pamela A. Eibeck, president of University of the Pacific. "The rankings also reflect our great diversity and extraordinarily engaged student body."

In addition to evaluating such factors as SAT scores and admission rates, the Wall Street Journal and Times Higher Education also asked 100,000 college students about their experiences with professors and the opportunities they are provided to collaborate on projects. The survey also explored whether students were pushed to think critically and whether they would recommend their school to others.
