Preparing for annual staff performance reviews

Apr 25, 2017

It is time again to cap a great year of ongoing feedback and employee development by initiating conversations and preparing the documentation for the annual performance reviews.

Human Resources will offer identical one-hour sessions tailored to supervisors to provide basic guidance, tips and time to talk through challenges and concerns to help make this process successful for supervisors and their employees. The sessions will be different from last year; we encourage those who have previously attended to come again.

The sessions are being held in the Human Resources Training Room on:

  • Thursday, April 27, 12-1 pm
  • Tuesday, May 2, 2-3 pm
  • Thursday, May 11, 11 am-12 pm

To do the review process well takes time, planning and effort, but it makes a significant and positive difference to an employee's perspective about how important they are to this institution and to the students we serve.

Please remember that a performance review, if done well:

  • Is one key to successfully managing people;
  • Is an integral part of day-to-day operations and long-range planning and goal-setting;
  • Is one tool to facilitate and maintain open communication between a supervisor and his/her staff member;
  • Facilitates a staff member's own career development;
  • Helps an employee meet his/her professional goals; and
  • Is an opportunity for a supervisor and staff to discuss the successes in accomplishing the past year's goals and to establish a plan for achieving University, department and individual goals and objectives in the coming year.

A frequent need we hear from staff is more attention, development, mentoring and training to help them continue on their career path. The university has a role to support these activities and will expand its support as resources allow. We encourage all supervisors to spend additional time in this process discussing your employees' career aspirations, needs and ways you can further develop their skills, knowledge and experience.

The tentative plan to begin the process of revising performance management and evaluation processes and forms will begin in 2019 as resources become available.
