Henry and Alice Hirata

The Pacific Alumni Association is proud to announce the appointment of Henry Hirata as the Procession Leader for the Rose Walk, leading members of University of the Pacific's Class of 1974 50th Reunion into the 2024 Commencement ceremony. Henry Hirata, a distinguished member of the Class of 1964, has a remarkable journey from a traditional Japanese farming family to achieving success in academia and public service.

Henry graduated from Pacific's School of Engineering and Computer Science in 1964 and enjoyed a successful career as an engineer, eventually becoming the director of public works in San Joaquin County, a position he held for 18 years. He was married to Alice for 62 years, and they have two daughters and two grandchildren, one of whom will be graduating this Commencement with a biochemistry degree.

Throughout his career, Henry Hirata has embodied values such as empathy, innovation, and community service, which he attributes to his time at University of the Pacific. Their empathy motivated the Hiratas to give back generously to University of the Pacific. The couple endowed two scholarships, supported several building projects and have been athletic boosters for more than 40 years.

University of the Pacific celebrates Henry Hirata's appointment as the Procession Leader for the Rose Walk, recognizing not only his individual achievements but also the enduring legacy of resilience and determination among its alumni.
